UPDATE – SITES NOW SOLD!
February 2010 Earnings
February saw the sale of one of my largest sites and two domain names, which gave me enough money to invest in a new project.
After thinking long and hard I’ve decided to keep what I’m doing under wraps until such times as I am confident it will not damage my efforts. Having previously advised published my latest website I’ve seen copycats pop up here and there. That’s a compliment really, however it can create unneccessary competition at an early stage and potential copied content issues – yes I’ve had someone rip a whole site of mine, even leaving my contact information in place!
I’m extremely excited about 2010 as I’ve just handed my yearly accounts to my accountant, and I’m pleased to announce a small but respectable profit. I treat my business like a savings account and never intend to draw funds from it until such times as I can pay myself a moderate income, so it is nice to see it growing at a slow but steady rate.
So, here’s a breakdown of what I earned in February…
- Website and domain sales – £4,800
- Google Adsense – £23.29
- Affiliate Commissions – £15.43
- Total: £4838.72 = $7277.45
- Daily average = $234.76 (I divided by 31 days and not 28)
Not a bad month considering it is just after Christmas!
Good luck with your persuits,
Khalid.
January 2010 Earnings
A new year, with new sites and refreshed hope. January was definately a better month than December and highlighted the potential of affiliate marketing. I tried setting up mini sites that were four or five pages and no luck. Not only was I missing out on the longtail traffic – which by the way is where I am getting sales now – the sites had little longevity being only a few pages.
- Google Adsense: £19.21
- TradeDoubler: £16.45
- Affiliate Window: £10.99
- Website Sales: £600
- Total: £646.65 = $1024.08
- Daily Average = $33.03
As we speak I’m setting up bigger affiliate sites like sex swings (adult) and triathlon bicycles.
Good luck with your persuits,
Khalid.

Domain Swapping
I recently completed my first domain swap deal, trading two solar domain names for compare flights, a ranking flight comparison website with a history of traffic and earnings.
I purchased the solar names for mid £xxx, thinking I could perhaps flip them for low four figures (which I had as an offer after the deal was done). Solar is an emerging market and the domains, SolarHeater.co.uk and the plural SolarHeaters.co.uk, were a nice pair.
I am happy with my new flight comparison site, and have already given it a makeover and adding more content as we speak!
I was pleasantly surprised and hope to either shelve the site as a revenue stream or flip it for mid four figures in the near future.
Good luck with your persuits,
Khalid.
p.s. a quick shout out for a critical illness comparison site owned by a friend of mine!

Starting 2010
Happy New Year to you all! Starting 2010 with a fresh head after two weeks holiday has allowed me to re-evaluate my position and where I go from here. To be honest, I’m in quite a difficult position and so have decided to try a few different moves in a bid to build my future.
Firstly, I’ve started an geo network of Edinburgh sites including Edinburgh Hairdresser and Edinburgh Taxis. In total I have 15 domains, 10 of which have active websites on them. A few are already on page one and the long term plan is to sell private advertising to local business owners.
Secondly, I’ve sold a few small affiliate sites and started re-doing things properly, with the launch of Bass Amp. I picked this name up recently in a clear out portfolio sale and had a private offer for it within 24 hours of owning it. I think it is a good name with plenty of potential and possible a sale to an end user in the near future. I spent a day manually adding products to ensure there is little copied content from the merchants so I am hoping my sore fingers will be rewarded with some cash on affiliate sales!
Thirdly, I am still running Trout as my main investment with a view of it either providing a decent revenue stream or selling to an end user such as a magazine publication. The site is on target to receive 3,000 unique visitors this month.
Finally, I am negotiating for a few domain names with potential to sell individual digital products (don’t worry not eBooks!). My idea is to then setup an affiliate program and have people promote it for me. Targetting a niche and offering, say 50% commission, should be quite appealing to affiliates as ppc campaigns should not cost a lot and each sale offers a high return.
Being an Internet Entrepreneur is not an easy task and I’m constantly followed on Twitter daily by “Guru’s” pretending to offer get-rich-quick schemes that anyone can do from home. The fact of the matter is, if it was that easy everyone would be doing it and driving around in Ferrari’s. Hard work, determination, and the ability to learn from your mistakes is what it takes.
Good luck with your persuits,
Khalid.
Chiropractor.co.uk SOLD!
After building a strong website with in excess of 50 unique pages of content, ranking it in the SERPs and actively promoting it’s potential, Chiropractor.co.uk was recently sold to a private client.
Unfortunately, I cannot disclose the sale price but Rob and I are happy with the deal and will continue our 50/50 deals
Good luck with your pursuits,
Khalid.
Domain Portfolio Expanding
I’ve been busy working away at a few new projects this week, particularly sunroom and driveway paving. My domain portfolio is slowly expanding and I’m weeding out all the names I no longer wish to have. It’s not that they are bad names, it’s just that I don’t have time to maintain smaller sites or ones in different markets.
Check our my portfolio and keep reading for more updates soon!
Good luck with your persuits,
Khalid.
Kefalonia.co.uk SOLD!
That’s right. After listing the site for sale with a view of gaining mid to high four figure offers, I received an e-mail enquiry asking if it was still for sale. After some negociating I can confirm the domain + site have been sold with a return of 775%!
I’m very pleased as I felt with Kefalonia, despite it being a fantastic site, it had constraints and I want to step my investments up a gear. It was a recent acquisition and just shows you can still earn money in flipping, should that be your chosen path.
Just thought I’d share my good news
Good luck with your persuits,
Khalid.
Cutting Your Losses
Being an entrepreneur is all about taking calculated risks, but sometimes are calculations are wrong and our investments tumble. This occurs daily in the stock market and building/buying websites is quite similar.
As an entrepreneur we analyse the potential for a developed site or planned idea and the possible return on investment (ROI). However, we cannot control all the forces involved and can become a victim of a tradegy out with our control, for example when the dot com bubble burst.
Thankfully, the internet is a much more stable market place and this is a rare occurance but every day people register new domains or pour their hearts into an idea that aims for the moon but misses, and lands amongst the stars – plodding along but never reaching the top.
If you remember a while ago I was attempting to dominate the “bar jobs” market and registered about 50 domains which were developed into mini-sites, had BarVacancy.com custom coded and spent hours contacting bar/nightclub owners and managers advertising the free site. Similar to Gumtree, BarVacancy.com was purely for the nightclub industry and I thought if I targetted a niche I may do well.
Unfortunately a site like this needs a large marketing budget and I failed. The idea wasn’t a failure though, the sites plod along and makes enough money but I simply didn’t have enough time to pump more energy into it and re-generate it.
Fortunately my hard work didn’t go to waste and I sold the network to one of my frequent buyers who has a similar network that will compliment his purchase. For me it was about cutting my losses and getting out whilst I still could. I could have easily let the names expire or just broken even with Adsense on the sites but they were never going to be winners in my hands – that doesn’t mean they can’t be.
Sometimes you have to admit defeat and yes I lost money but I learned a lot, I gained experience and I am happy I tried. I think there is plenty of potential let in the network especially as it has been left to mature for 6 months and most of the sites have a good Google ranking but it wasn’t one for me.
Good luck with your persuits,
Khalid.
