I think that unless you buy really inappropriate domains, then more or less anything is a good purchase. It will more than likely have benefit to someone, and older domains have more search engine backing than new ones. I'm holding onto 3 domains at the moment. One has about a 4-year lifespan (after which it will be pointless as the event will have happened already), however the other 2 are events that take place every year.
